UNIFERON®

Injectable iron supplement for piglets

Uniferon® is a highly stable 200mg/ml iron dextran complex that is completely absorbed, assimilated, and converted into blood haemoglobin by the piglet. Easy to use and intramuscular injection of Uniferon® leads to rapid, safe and effective absorption, assimilation and conversion of the iron to haemoglobin for incorporation into the blood. This quickly improves the transport of oxygen to the peripheral cells and carbon dioxide back to the lungs.

Our high standards

Designed to meet your high standards

In addition to Uniferon® meeting the highest manufacturing standards we work closely with swine producers, veterinarians and other partners around the world, to incorporate best practice solutions into our treatments. The proper administration of Uniferon® is a simple way to realize higher production yields and higher profits.

  • Injectable iron dextran was introduced as a treatment for piglets in the 1950’s. Those first-generation products had disadvantages, were produced with organic solvents and were difficult-to-produce solutions containing more than 10% elemental iron. In 1967, the Gleptoferron formulation for injectable iron was introduced. Like early iron dextran, the use of organic solvents meant that residual solvents and cyanide impurities were often present.

Gleptoferron is produced with organic solvents and cyanide and approved for veterinary use only.

  • The modern injectable iron age began with the introduction of Uniferon®. Using absolutely no organic solvents or cyanide, Uniferon is the only brand of injectable iron for the global veterinary market that meets both veterinary and human standards.

The Uniferon carbohydrate end group is hydrogenated, not cyanide-modified, and is therefore cyanide free.

Purity matters

Only Uniferon® showed undetectable levels of arsenic and lead while having chromium levels well within the established and weight-adjusted human PDE limits. This goes back to our impeccable manufacturing standards.

Not only is Uniferon® approved by health authorities in Europe and Asia and the U.S., it’s also free of detectable levels of heavy metal impurities. A study published in the Journal of Swine Health and Production1 showed that 4 out of 5 tested injectable iron supplements sold in the U.S. contained measurable concentrations of heavy metals (arsenic, chromium and sometimes lead*) that exceeded the weight-adjusted Permitted Daily Exposure (PDE) limits for humans2.

*Elevated levels of arsenic, chromium and lead were detected in all but one injectable iron product. And only one product possessed concentrations of all three elements that were either undetected or below the permitted daily exposure limits for each heavy metal: Uniferon.

DOSING

Two doses deliver double the benefits

Improved daily gain post-weaning

A first dose of Uniferon® has proven efficacy in preventing anaemia and improving the health of piglets while ensuring optimal average daily weight gain through the lactation period. Furthermore, a second dose has shown additional weight-gain advantages throughout the nursery1,2, 3.
